Hello Literarians!
Once again I have been extremely naughty and been AWOL for ages again. I just put my beloved dog of 14 and a half years to rest so the past couple months have been rough with the last months of his life and the weeks after, so I did need to take a break from reviewing and reading and just binge watched Doctor Who and Veronica Mars. But I wanted to do a review for all you lovelies today.
Somehow I liked a Raine Miller fan page on Facebook, strangely enough I seem to like a lot of random pages and things just start showing up in my feed, but it intrigued me. Some of the quotes and images posted definitely peaked my interest. So I got my behind over to kobo and bought the first three in a set. And I was pleasantly surprised.
The series consists of four books, Naked, All In, Eyes Wide Open, and Rare and Precious Things. And I ended up reading all four in about 3 days.
To be completely honest I'm not going to say it's the best thing that I have ever read, it's reminiscent of the Crossfire series by Silvia Day. That's not a bad thing, a lot of these series are fairly similar. But it was still a very good read and I read all four in succession, including the spin of Cherry girl, which will be reviewed in it's own post. The reason I am doing this as a series review is honestly each book just kind of blended into one for me because I read them back to back.
Naked introduced us to two very charismatic characters. Brynne Bennett, an American art student living her dream in London, studying what she loves while working as a nude model. She meets drop dead gorgeous Ethan Blackstone, CEO of a one of a successful security company, as he buys her portrait at a gallery. They both have lot of secrets and dark and disturbing pasts that threaten to keep them apart. But there is also a helluva a lot of light-your-panties-on-fire chemistry.
I loved the London setting, it was a nice change from some other stories that I've read, especially because british vocab is a guilty pleasure of mine. And I will say that Raine Miller aced description of Ethan Blackstone and the settings of their various destinations.
And I loved some of Ethan's inner monologues, especially when Brynne's hormones are going crazy and he discovers what it's like to deal with a girlfriend on her period, as he calls it Dead Week, or as I call it, Shark Week. I also love the discussion about FSoG, it was in passing but it was still entertaining.
As far as the sex goes some of it was definitely crazy hot, but there was almost too much sex, towards the end of the series I just didn't care and would skip the sex scenes to get back to the plot. I found that a lot of the sex didn't really add to the plot and there wasn't enough variety. If you are going to put that many sex scenes in a book you need to mix it up, do some kinky shit, bondage, toys, maybe even a little three way. Don't just do the same thing over and over. But I will say that I love the vocab in terms of female lady bits. Quim and snatch are words that aren't used very often, and is a nice change from your standard use of pussy and cunt. So yes I did enjoy some of the sex, just not all of it.
The most interesting part of the series was the threat that is hanging over Brynne's head, who is trying to hurt her? Will they succeed? And the question of whether or not their love will prevail *sings my heart will go on* especially with how damaged they both are, especially Brynne.
Out of the whole series Naked was definitely my favourite, the characters and plot was compelling and intriguing. I am getting a little bored of the damaged characters falling in love, I find the plot has just been done to death, and this had it's standout points for sure. Especially how Brynne cares for Ethan after his nightmares and him after hers.
In summary I give this series a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
So check it out if it intrigues you. Tell me your thoughts!
Thanks for reading my review! I hope you are all well!
