Hey Everyone!
It's been way to long since I've done a review, but I am going through a lull in my reading right now. You know when you just don't feel like reading constantly like you normally do? So the fact that I read this book so fast during my lull is even further proof that this book is ahmazing.
So when I was at the book store I was just having a peruse in the romance section to see if anything new caught my eye. Seducing Cinderella instantly caught my eye. First of all the cover is gorgeous, it sexy and inviting but it's also a little subdued. It's not your usual BAM sexy man on the cover. The colour makes it subtle and I was more drawn to the title than anything else. Usually before I buy a book I do research, look at reviews on goodreads and have ideas of the books I am going to buy before I go to the bookstore, but this was a random. I left the book store now knowing why I bought it to be honest, but I was very pleased with my pick. This is Gina L. Maxwell's debut novel and the beginning of a great new series.
I am a 90s baby and I grew up on Disney Princess movies, stories, songs, the whole lot. So the idea of a modern romance story with a touch of Cinderella was definitely intruiged me. And I would say after reading the whole novel I definitely picked up Cinderella, it wasn't a side by side comparison but it was close enough that the disney girl in me still squealed.
Quick synopsis here for everyone:
Lucie Miller is a Physical Therapist in Nevada crushing on the hot surgeon she frequently works with. She sees herself as a plain jane, bookish, smart but she would never consider herself sexy. So when old friend, now famous UFC fighter Reid Andrew shows up in her clinic in need of some serious physical therapy, they make a deal. Reid needs intense 24/7 physical therapy for the next 2 months in order to get ready for the fight to win back his title, in exchange for Lucie's help, Reid will teach her the art of seduction so she can win over the doctor she has been crushing on for years.
So obviously nothing goes as planed and they end up falling hard for each other though they try their best to deny it.
I really enjoyed this story, it was a little predictable ... okay it was a lot predictable. There was the big dramatic twist toward the end and then the story ended with a HAE. Which I was totally okay with.
The description of the setting left something to be desired, I didn't really feel like I could picture their surroundings, which honestly bothered me a little bit, but to me this is better than too much description.
The story itself was relatively unique even though it did follow the standard romance format, which I really have no problem with, the details and most of the story were different from the other fighter romances I have read (ie Beautiful Disaster) and I liked how Reid was Lucie's fairy godmother and her prince at the same time, it was a fun little spin to the story. And you know me, I can't get enough of any guy with tats who knows how to fight :P
And I know this is a debut novel so I may be being a little over critical, and for a first novel it really was amazing, I just can't wait to see how her writing develops over the rest of the series.
The main issue I had with the story was the ending felt really rushed. I have issues when I read an entire novel just to have a few pages of a happy ending. I want more, I want details, I want an epilogue, I want sometime more.
Overall I would give this a solid 4 stars, it was really fantastic but it's not quite the best of the best. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone who likes a good, young, fun romance.
Thanks for reading!
Peace, Love and Literature
Quick Update: Another huge bonus is that I have now discovered this publisher Entangled Brazen, they have oodles of ebooks on Kobo for $2.99 so I am going to go get some and see how the rest of them are!
10/3/2013 Update: So I have been in touch with the author and she explained why there is no epilogue, she explains it all here. And after reading Rules of Entanglement I feel totally satisfied with the ending of Reid and Lucie's story (even though I could read a whole trilogy just centred on those two!). But yeah, after reading the explanation I totally understand why there was no epilogue, in Seducing Cinderella, and RoE is really like an epilogue for them in a way. Peace and Love!
