Hello Book Lovers!
I know I've already broken my promise! I haven't been doing reviews every week like I said I would but the past couple weeks I've been in a bit of a slump, I just didn't feel like sinking my teeth into a book, it's been more Netflix marathons than anything else. But I'm back on a reading binge so I'm hoping there will be lots of reviews up in March!
Anyways, I got a tweet from Pamela Aares (or her PR people, I honestly don't know) about the release of Love Bats Last. The cover is Bella Andre-esk so I was intrigued. Personally I am not a baseball fan (or much of a sports fan besides UFC tbh) but the Marine Animal Veterinarian intrigued me because my current job is as a receptionist at an animal clinic. And the book was less than $5 on kobo so I decided to try it, and Holy Unicorns it was amazing!
Quick summary:
Alex Tavonesi is an All-Star baseball player and winery owner who meets Marine Animal Veterinarian Jackie Brandon on the side of a river. He is instantly intrigued by her and ends up volunteering at the marine animal rescue centre that Jackie spends her life running. Sparks fly but it's not smooth sailing, especially because something in the water is hurting the marine life.
To start off, there was serious science and research behind this book! The author clearly has a lot of knowledge about both baseball and marine biology, there was a lot of scientific detail and a very intimate look at baseball. I felt like I actually learned a lot during this book, and I have a whole new appreciation for the sport of baseball, the strength and precision it requires. I never realized that batters have a fraction of a second to figure out where the ball is going and try to hit it. That's some seriously tough stuff! So the research and detail of this book was mind blowing. The fact that the author used all of the correct terminology to do with the lab and the rescue centre was extremely impressive.
I enjoyed that there was an edge of mystery to the whole novel, even though the story was primarily about the love story between Alex and Jackie. During the entire book I just kept wanting to know what was happening to the poor animals! I was super impressed that Pamela Aares was able to perfectly, and I do mean perfectly, combine a compelling love story and a thrilling mystery. It was absolutely brilliant because I wasn't just reading to find out the happy ending, I was also reading to find out who dun it.
The steam factor was good for sure, not as mind blowing as some books I have read but it definitely satisfied me. Overall it was just a really amazing novel! I love the detail, I loved the precision, I loved Alex and Jackie, especially because Alex didn't back down. The story kept me on my toes and I din't want to put it down, and the writing was just really well done.
I definitely recommend this to anyone, and I am so happy that Pamela Aares tweeted me or else I probably wouldn't have known about this incredible book. So please go check it out! I promise you will love it. I cannot wait for Thrown by Love (out March 4th!) which is Scotty's story. I really hope she also does stories for Alex's sister and Jackie's brother!
5 Shiny Stars!
